Tawau to Helen Reef
150 miles from our first stop, Helen reef in Palau, the wind changes to easterlies, while the current also reverses. We crawl past Tobi island at sunrise with another 40 miles to go and we doubt if we will be able to reach Helen reef before sunset. Just then the wind direction improves slightly, the adverse current diminishes somewhat and we are able to motor straight to the Helen reef pass. We are just in time to enter the pass, but cannot continue to Helen island, another 7 miles, so we anchor in the pass at a depth of 15 meters. We hope it is sand, but the scraping sounds made by the chain suggests coral as well. The next day the whole population of Helen island comes out to guide us further (David, Max, Jamos and Mathilda) and after a bit more nerve wrecking adventure (in between the reefs with very little manoeuvring space the engine stops due to a dirty diesel filter, which Joop replaces, while the welcome committee drags us along in the right direction). We arrive at a safe and comfortable anchorage just south of Helen island in the northern part of the lagoon. We have completed the first 880 nautical miles in about 9 days, a good average for the Vaarwel. |
Following are two pictures from underway: Hanneke's mahi-mahi and Joop who is transferring diesel fom a jerrycan to the main tank (smelly, but important task).
